Bagby Conditions

I went to Bagby on May 16th & 18th. There were only a few areas of snow left. Boy, the water was sure flowing in the rivers! All the facilities were working, except for the 3 historic tubs on the open deck. The connection between the flume and the tubs are destroyed and therefore the water is being bypassed to the big tub. I dont know when I will get around to fixing them, since every time I do, they are quickly destroyed again.
Please remember to pack out more then you packed in and think about volunteering at Bagby. If people dont step up to help out, the FS will no doubt turn the facility over to a for-profit company to operate (like Hoodoo operates Cougar HS). That would mean a parking fee, day-use fee, and a camping fee. And who knows what that would mean for the way Bagby would be managed and maintained. So if you care about Bagby and dont want to see it "go to hell" and/or operated 'for-profit', be sure to do something about it. NFC has work parties every 3rd weekend of the month along with special events all the time. Be sure to check out www.nwforests.org for more info.

Hey went up there on Saturday Night June 21st. The NFC was having another work weekend. The drive was great, awesome night for some soaking. The trail is in excellent condition. Met Mike, Jack, and a few others up there. The place was packed all night, lots of people camping out there. The summer has definitly started. So if you plan to go up there for the weekend, expect a lot of people.

Ug...was up there july 12th. No cold water anywhere. What few people up there that Sat night where bringing water up from the stream. I found that someone had turned off the spring and 4 joints had been disconnected. I also found a cut in the pipe going to the upper tub at the split. Took me about 3 hours to get everything working right. 
Very quiet night otherwise. Had some late night groups come in but there were small and only 1 was loud.

I was at the springs on Thursday 10-02. They were fairly clean, very little to pack out. The cistern was empty, the only cold water was from a orange tube. Had a peaceful soak with good company.

We headed up to Bagby April 17th-19th for the Northwest Forest Conservancy work event. The road is clear of snow and we made it up Friday afternoon and got right to work setting up our interpretive booth in the parking lot. A reporter for the Oregonian showed up to do a story on the crime reduction because of NFC's efforts. Then we cleared out a tree that had fallen across the parking lot. We split it up and used for our campfire to keep the volunteers warm.
We soaked friday evening, or at least tried to. It seemed all the tubs on the lower deck had a leak in them. The large round tub couldn't keep full even with a constant flow of hot water. By the time we got out, it was down to the bench. The round tub at the upper deck also had a leak that was keeping it from filling up as well. Saturday morning we went right to getting the upper tub fixed so that the volunteers could have a soak after working all day. I believe the problem was a really bad patch over a hole in the bottom of the tub. It got fixed and we had a nice soak saturday night.
Also on Satuday, I picked up about 15 grocery bags full of garbage and set them out for people to take down to the parking lot. In no time at all they were gone. Mike managed the cabin restoration work, and he had quite a few eager volunteers helping out. Jack's trail crew did quite a bit of trail work up to the springs, cutting out trees and brush and raking out the muddy spots. I manned the parking lot booth and had a chance to talk to alot of interesting people, most of them were first timers at Bagby. One couple from New Zealand had flown to Portland, rented a car and headed to Bagby!
Sunday we soaked, packed up and headed out. Mike gave a small group of us a tour of where there used to be a dam built below the springs to create a swimming pool. The wooden plank dam has since fallen over, but the remains are all there. Interesting history!
On the way down the trail we ran into a regular who said that he was at Austin soaking and was kicked out by friends of the owners. We went down there and sure enough a couple on a motorcycle were informing everyone that it was private property and No Trespassing allowed. A new dirt road entrance has been created.
We also stopped by Austin on Tuesday the 22nd. There were plenty of people sunbathing, but the river had come up and over the dam built by the pool. Someone showed up and started building up the dam, this warmed the pool up and everyone started jumping in, everyone had swimsuits on. The trash was average for Austin. I took a look at the edge of the pool and in one section 2ft x 2ft I cleaned up several pieces of glass, egg shells from at least 2 eggs, 5 bullet shells, several bottle caps and the remains of a camp fire that was now underwater. Aside from the garbage it was an absolutely beautiful sunny day out there. Then we headed up to Bagby to soak!
Well that concludes my soaking report. I'll be back in the area May 16th for our annual Austin to Bagby clean up.

Drove up with a friend April 29th. We didn't see anyone on the road after passing Estacada and thought we might be first to arrive, but there was one other car in the lot when we pulled in around 10a.
Trail in had some scattered trash and cigarette butts. Some areas were slightly mushy with rain, but easily navigable.
The round tub on the lower deck has a couple of leaks that prevent it from filling past the benches. All of the individual tubs on the lower deck worked great.
When we returned to the parking lot around 1:30p, there were about 15 cars in the lot.
I wish we had been able to pack out more of the trash that was found at the springs, but overall, a great first soak of the year!

I have never been to a hot springs before and would love to take my hubby on a surprise date to Bagby this weekend. Can anyone tell me if I should expect a lot of crowds this weekend? Is it safe at night? I have read a couple things that talk about vandalism of cars/theft/violence at Bagby and I am a bit concerned...
Also, anything I should know about safely using the hot spring tubs? What is all this business about burns, etc?
Lastly, I understand this is a clothing optional site. I am okay with that, but should I expect to encounter any shenanigans from other visitors in the night hours that would intrude on our privacy/sense of safety?
Thanks for all your help! Having always lived in the Pac NW and camping all our lives, this would be a new special treat.

Hi Sarah,
Sounds like a nice treat!
With the nice weather I expect a good amount of visitors. But it seems there is always room, even if you have to wait a little. Usually you would only have to wait to use a private tub. If you want to soak communally (as with most hot springs) you dont usually have to wait.
There is no way to guarantee safety, but NFC is having a big cleanup and BBQ this Saturday, so it should be safer.

Hi HVAC Dan,
Thanks for your regular comments on Bagby!
I thought I would answer your questions about NFC's work at Bagby. First, the Forest Service manages Bagby and owns the bathhouses, any work on them requires their permission. NFC does recieve permission to work on these facilities on occasion, but has to prioritize repairs (safety, etc). NFC has agreements with the FS to maintain the trail and restore the historic cabin for volunteers to stay in, but they have been unwilling to give us an agreement for the bathhouses. We do what we can to improve/repair them at every work party, but every step forward has two steps back.
Garbage left on site has always been a problem. One day the place will be trashed, the next totally clean. Many people help out by packing out other peoples trash. Everyday people take the inititive to pack out others trash, if they didn't it would continue to accumulate into mountains of garbage.
Any type of system where you encourage people to leave there trash on-site (bags, cans, bins etc) will increase the amount of garbage left at the springs. The people that would pack out their trash would leave it and the people that leave there trash on the ground would leave it on the ground. This is a good opportunity for people to learn they need to pack out what they packed in and for other to learn how to be good stewards of public land.
Finally, Bagby is set to be operated by a consessionaire by next year. The FS will need to get the facilities repaired soon or no one will bid on the broke down / trashed bathhouses. I dont really feel like making the place real pretty so they get lots of bidders!
NFC is at Bagby every 3rd weekend of the month.

THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF NUMEROUS YELLOW JACKETS AND BEES IN THE WOODS AND CAMPING AREAS. THE BEES SEEM TO BE EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE, PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN RIDING HORSES AND HIKING.
Bagby Update 9/14/09:
Self Service Fee Station at Bagby Trailhead is operational. The Forest Service has an employee working as a Forest Protection Officer and maintaining the facilities throughout the weekend as well as writing tickets for non-compliance issues..
Mt. Hood National Forest is currently conducting discussions with naturist advocates to clarify Forest Service policy at Bagby Hot Springs. Clarification is expected within two weeks.

Beginning at 0630, November 10, 2009, Bagby will not be accessible as contractors are falling hazard trees in the trailhead parking and overflow parking at No-Horn. The project should be completed by 10AM

What are the current road conditions like? Is Bagby still accessible, or has the recent snow closed the roads for the season?
